About this calculator

This tool uses the industry-standard steel pipe weight formula published in the ASTM Annual Book of Standards and used across the pipe industry:

Weight per foot (lb/ft) = 10.69 × (OD − Wall Thickness) × Wall Thickness

Where OD and Wall Thickness are both in inches. The constant 10.69 accounts for the density of carbon steel and unit conversions. Total weight is simply weight per foot multiplied by length in feet.

Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) and actual outside diameter are not the same. For NPS 1/8" through 12", the OD is larger than the NPS number — for example, "6 inch" pipe has an actual OD of 6.625". For NPS 14" and up, the OD matches the NPS.

Note: Results are nominal estimates for carbon steel pipe based on the standard formula. Actual pipe weight can vary due to mill tolerances (typically ±3.5% per API 5L). Always verify critical dimensions and load calculations against manufacturer data sheets before rigging or structural work.
